TV Series - The Sinner (Season 4)
Cast - Bill Pullman, Jesicca Hecht, Michael Mosley, Frances Fisher, Cindy Cheung, Ronin Wong
First episode aired on - October 13 2021

Bill Pullman is back with a bang as this season returns to its roots - the highs of season 1 are never reached but nevertheless, a massive improvement over the somewhat bland season 2 and the rather absurd and far fetched season 3.
Plot ( Spoiler free) - Harry Ambrose and his new girlfriend Sonya travel to Hanover Island to take a break, with Harry apparently now retired. While having lunch with Sonya's artist friend Greta, he meets Percy Muldoon who works for her father's fishing company. In the night , unable to sleep due to insomnia, he decides to take a stroll, and hears Percy arguing with someone else from a distance. He follows her and she jumps off a cliff before he could save him. Harry decides to help the police chief Lou Raskin after being told by Percy's grandmother Meg[ these retired detectives simply can't stay retired and keep their hands and minds off criminal cases, can they? ;) ]. Why did Percy commit suicide? Did Mike Lam, her father's fishing company rival, have a hand in it? Did her grandmother Meg really love Percy as much as she showed, or else was there something more beneath the surface? Or did Percy eventually get consumed by guilt?

Review and Analysis ( Spoiler Free) - Initially planned as a limited series with only season 1 on the cards( season 1 was based on a book by Petra Hammesfahr), audiences took a liking to Bill Pullman's character haunted by his demons( his lonely childhood and his fetish of subjecting himself to pain while making love with anyone) and the fact that seemingly ordinary citizens would commit a gruesome crime due to various reasons, the producers decided to make it a full fledged series with recurring seasons, with Bill Pullman one of the few recurring characters throughout all seasons. However , each season has a standalone story that could nevertheless be watched without watching the preceding seasons. The high expectations that I had after season 1 was somewhat tempered by the rather cliched and pedestrian season 2 and the absurd and implausible season 3. Placing the rather grey and suspicious characters amidst the beautiful greenery of Hanover Island, while going back to the original roots of the season 1 of keeping the plot taut and fast paced was a welcome change. The mystery is gradually uncovered throughout all the 8 episodes, while Harry Ambrose keeps on relentlessly pursuing the investigation even after being left by his girlfriend Sonya and keeps on uncovering some unexpected twists and turns.
Coming to the performances, Bill Pullman does not put a step wrong as Harry Ambrose. His emotionally layered and nuanced performance strengthens his character's extreme devotion to getting to the bottom of the case anyhow while being haunted by feelings of guilt over Jamie Burns(from season 3) and even risking his companionship with Sonya. Neal Huff and Michael Mosely also play their characters Sean Muldoon(Percy's father) and Colin Muldoon(Percy's uncle) satisfactorily, though I feel that their grey characters had more shades of black than white and could be improved a bit. David Huynh who plays CJ Lam, the son of Mike Lam also portrays the emotional conflict of being torn between feelings of love for Percy and hatred for the Muldoons. Also, I looked up and found out his age is 39(!!) while he plays the role of a school going student in the series! Among the female characters, Alice Kremelberg portrays the character of Percy Muldoon undergoing an emotional transformation from free natured to emotionally withdrawn quite well. Frances Fisher as Meg Muldoon, Percy's grandmother, also displays her acting chops as the strong willed backbone of the Muldoon family in the absence of the male patriarch. Sonya's character played by Jessica Hecht could be rather improved upon as her character is reduced to playing the per functionary companion of Harry Ambrose without portraying the emotional depth.

All in all, a satisfying whodunit which can definitely satisfy someone looking out for a juicy murder mystery. If you are looking out for something dark with lots of twists and turns, watch out for this one. You can even skip the previous seasons since each series has a standalone story!

Final Rating - 9/10
